Learning and development for staff supporting people affected by cancer:

We have been working to improve and strengthen our systems in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and have identified that access to training and development for staff supporting people affected by cancer is an important resource.

We asked staff as well as our People Affected by Cancer Advisory Board where further training and development would be of benefit and we have utilised the key themes that emerged to create a repository for training.

Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development

The ACCEND (Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development) is designed to develop the cancer workforce in the UK by providing a structured and standardised approach to education, training, and career development. It supports the cancer workforce at all levels of practice, from support staff to advanced practitioners, by outlining clear learning pathways, competency frameworks, and career progression opportunities. Its ultimate goal is to enhance workforce sustainability, ensure high-quality care for cancer patients, and adapt to advancements in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management.

We have therefore aligned learning, education and development opportunities within psycho-social support to the ACCEND framework. For those working in psycho-social cancer care, the ACCEND Framework defines the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to deliver evidence-based psychological and emotional support to patients effected by cancer. This can include:

  • Understanding the psychological impact of cancer on patients, families, and caregivers.

  • Recognising and responding to distress, including screening for mental health concerns and providing appropriate interventions.

  • Coordinating multi-disciplinary support, working alongside oncologists, nurses, social workers, and mental health professionals.

  • Enhancing communication skills to support sensitive conversations about diagnosis, treatment, and end-of-life care.

  • Advancing professional practice through continuous learning, reflection, and career development pathways.

By aligning our learning resources with ACCEND, we ensure that professionals in psycho-social support are equipped with the latest evidence-based practices, fostering both personal career growth and improved outcomes for cancer patients. Whether you are just starting in this field or looking to specialise further, ACCEND provides a clear roadmap for professional development.

These resources are accessible, unless otherwise stated, to all health and social care staff. Any associated costs should be discussed within individual organisations.
