Prostate United Sheffield

Owls and Blades unite for prostate cancer battle

Fans and players at Sheffield’s top football clubs have been giving prostate cancer a kick as they raise money to help highlight the signs and symptoms and save lives.

Staff and fans of Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United joined fellow South Yorkshire clubs and clubs across the country to raise money and awareness of the cancer that claims around 12,000 lives a year and affects one in eight men.

Prostate United was founded in 2018 at Rotherham United and now involves 60 professional and non-league clubs, taking on sponsored challenges each year including distance running, cycling and walking.

Owls coach and Prostate United ambassador Chris Powell said prostate cancer was close to his heart and should be close to every man’s heart. “Prostate cancer is something that affects all men. Sadly, we lose one man every 45 minutes. This challenge is to keep fit but also to challenge yourself, challenge each other and help one another.

“For the fans and people who look at our website and read our match programmes they’ll hopefully see something that might switch a light on…and it could be that they’re suffering from one or two of the symptoms.

“And importantly, when women see the information they can tell their husbands, partners, brothers, dads, uncles. That’s the main message for me, it’s not just about us, it’s about everyone.”

Blades boss Chris Wilder sported a new Prostate United shirt at a recent press conference announcing the challenge that he and colleagues and fans were undertaking for 2024.

He said: It’s an incredible charity that we as staff support right the way through, raising money for a really important cause.”
