It’s time to bring cancer education to the classroom.

Cancer Education

We are working with young people and educational establishments in our region alongside the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre to develop an educational approach that will help us improve cancer outcomes for people across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

We recognise that this opportunity needs to be approached sensitively and appropriately to get this right. As such we are seeking interested parties from Primary, Secondary and Further education, alternative provision and anyone working with young people within South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to test and provide feedback on the resources we are creating ahead of their roll out in 2025.

Cancer education is essential, and it’s time we made it a priority in schools.

One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, a reality that can be deeply challenging for families and young people affected by it. Previously, cancer has been addressed in schools only through the science curriculum or in response to specific real-life situations.

However, research shows the impact of cancer education is essential. Through pilots carried out by cancer charities and other organisations, it has been proven that knowledge of cancer, risk factors, treatments, and conversations outside of the classroom increased significantly.

Cancer education in schools

We have developed a four part lesson pack for teachers to use in the classroom.

Each lesson has been created to teach students what cancer is, signs and symptoms to look out for and how they can show up for their peers, friends and family when tackling cancer together.

Please read through our safeguarding document before delivering these sessions as this will offer guidance on how to answer any questions students may have, the correct tone of voice to use and further information on where to go for help.
